Research proposal

For my composition, I want to write about the St. Andrew Society of Sarasota. Sarasota is a city about an hour south of Tampa. The St. Andrew Society is for American citizens that are of Scottish heritage. I know about this community because my family is Scottish, so my parents are members of the society. However, I do not know a lot about what my parents have to do to maintain their membership, or how they get inducted into the St. Andrew Society. Additionally, I will be able to use documents of the Ambrose family tree and immigration documents as my text for this project. There are many genres I can focus on for my topic, so in my paper I will concentrate on discussing the Highland Games of Sarasota. The Highland Games has many events that are organized by the St. Andrew Society. It is a festival filled with contests, food, and music specific to Scottish society. Every year there are log throwing contests, axe throwing contests, rock slinging, bagpipe concerts, and many other unique entertaining events. I was a volunteer last year at this event, and I loved how passionate Scottish- Americans were of their heritage. When I was younger, I did not truly appreciate my family’s history. Now I am fascinated by it and I want to ensure that I have a thorough knowledge of what life was like for my great grandparents. For this composition, I will interview my parents and grandparents to get more information on how the society was founded and their involvement in it.
